Esther, an elderly widow who lives in a Jewish assisted home, lets the men in the home lie with her in her bed. The men never touch Esther but share their feelings and tell their life stories, comforted by her willingness to listen. In refraining from any emotional involvement, Esther has created an isolated life. One day, just before the home celebrates the Passover holidays, one of the men visits Esther and expresses his gratitude and love and makes a request that will affect Esther in ways that she could not imagine.

Following the directions on a note, a woman enters a mysterious, empty mansion unaware of why she has come there and for what purpose. A stranger tells her why she has come-why they both have come-and shakes the woman’s sense of purpose and meaning of life. In the end of her journey, she is lead to a face-to-face reflection of her own life’s history, culminating in a discovery of the importance of religion and imagination.
